Project Summary
Indonesia has 230 millions of population, in which 62 millions are youth. However, the 7.2 millions of them are unemployed (BPS statistic data). Most of it is caused by lack of access to education and information. Providing the underprivileged youth about entrepreneurship will be one of the best solutions for the problem. Other than that, educating youth about the importance of environment sustainability for the future is another important highlight. Thus, this project aspires to link both economy and environmental aspects by utilizing the environment issue as the background to conduct entrepreneurship among youth as the agent of change. In addition, this project also aims to preserve the local value, which is often wise for the environment suitability within different local entity. In brief, this project would at the same time address the three main issues in Indonesia: youth unemployment, environment awareness and preserving local value.
This project is called YEP Camp (Youth EcoPreneurship Camp), because basically we want to train youth on ecopreneurship in a camp. Ecopreneruship itself refers to a process by which entrepreneurs introduce eco-friendly products and process into the marketplace. In YEP Camp, a young entrepreneur is a catalyst who brings together money, people, ideas and resources. We will utilize the environmental issues as the background to add more value in the products. For instance we want to make sure that the product that we will produce could preserve the nature and create a sustainable environment. Thus, this project begins from the consciousness that environmental challenges can be addressed through the development of environmental products and services that provide business opportunity, sustainable development, and local values. The YEP Camp is a way to teach potential youth in underprivileged areas to tackle global environmental issues and get profit from their business at the same time.
Practically, there will be 3 days camp on ecopreneurship dedicated for 30 potential yet underprivileged youth. The camp itself will be held in Cibodas National Park from 12-14 August 2013 (during International Youth Day). To support our activity, we are trying to build strong partnership with some local institutions (NGOs working on youth issues or orphanage) in West Java, South Sulawesi, and Papua (three of our focused provinces). The institutions will be responsible to select the participants, give the mentoring and coaching, and also help us on the evaluation management. Upon finishing the camp, we will give seed funding for those who create successfully project idea on ecopreneurship. The participant will also get marketing training and networks on selling their products better.
We expect that the 30 trained youth will be able to support their own life by utilizing environmental issues for entrepreneurship activity. Furthermore, it is expected that once the participant run their business smoothly, they would also able to inspire the community around them or recruiting their peers as their employee when their business become advance. By implementing this project, we are seeking to reduce the number of youth unemployment at the same time increase the environmental awareness.
The process of this programme approximately takes 9 months, include the evaluation. For the first start, we would do some survey on targeted NGOs in West Java, South Sulawesi, and Papua and then gather them into Technical Meeting on YEP Camp in Jakarta. After that, we will search a lot of logistics needs for preparing the camp, while we are also doing media campaign and information publication. Upon finishing the camp activity, we will find the potential market to develop and expand the participants’ products, build branding and marketing strategy which in cooperate with private sectors. Finally, we will still maintain their projects by monitoring, coaching, and having evaluation management.
We believe that YEP Camp will not be successful without inclusive collaboration from all sectors. Therefore, we would really appreciate if Singapore-ASEAN fund could support this project as well as our other partners. We develop, empower, expand, and preserve 30 local potential youth on creating better social life and sustainable environment.
